Helpful tips when walking your dog

Clients often come to me because their dogs are difficult for them to walk. Either the dog is pulling on the leash or veering back and forth in front of them, or the dog keeps insisting on stopping to sniff the grass every few feet. Those issues are easy to resolve with training but there are also some basic mistakes that people often make which get in the way of an enjoyable walk with your dog.

  • Always wear sneakers when walking your dog. That is what will give you the best purchase and so the best control. If your dog suddenly pulls hard on the leash and you are wearing sandals or boots, that will throw you off-balance.
  • Be connected to your dog when you are walking them. Don’t be on your phone. The more aware you are of your surroundings, the more prepared you are when your dog spots another dog or a squirrel or a cat.
  • Talk to your dog when you are walking them. Again, be connected. Enjoy the walk. The more you are talking to your dog the harder it is for them to look for or focus on another dog.
  • Do not use a retractable leash. Ever. Use a six-foot leather leash as that will keep the dog closer to you more naturally and it will give you a world of control.
  • The more daily walks your dog gets, the more stimulation and exposure they will receive. This will help them become better socialized and will also lead to better behavior at home.
  • Do not let someone pet your dog or let another dog greet your dog on a walk. I am fine with people petting your dog but never on a walk. If you allow that to happen, your dog will learn to pull towards people so that they can get attention from them. The same goes for allowing your dog to greet other dogs when you are walking them.
